Watching the Olympic Games the past few weeks may have sparked your child's interest in fitness and sports. This weekend, the city helps you harness their curiosity with free and low-cost events, including free bike rentals and rock climbing at Summer Streets. Then, test your skills at canoeing as you paddle around Prospect Park's lake and waterways, or round up the family to compete in 12 different activity stations, from jumping rope to throwing a javelin, at the Family Adventure Race ($10 per team). Ease back-to-school jitters with hands-on activities that'll dust your child's mind of the cobwebs that may have settled in over the long vacation. Explore nanoscience through structures and materials, and learn about "Crazy Chemistry" or "Wild Weather" during Family Summer Science. Or discover the science behind building bridges, and see how certain works of art were created. Plants, Bugs, & Your Teddy Bear: From chrysalis to cocoon to a butterfly, kids can search for the winged creatures on a walk through the butterfly garden, at the Nature Center's flight house, or on a family-friendly walk at Wave Hill (free admission to the grounds before 12pm). Then, solve nature riddles with your family on a seasonal scavenger hunt before learning all about gardens and making a sachet during Family Fun at the Farm Market. Elsewhere, learn about plant life through hands-on projects at the Queens Botanical Garden. Plus, your favorite teddy bear is invited to the zoo to learn with you facts about real bears. Time Travel: Take the kids out to a ballgame played with rules and uniforms of the 1860s, or join the historians for family-friendly activities, historic weapons demos, music, and more at Civil War Weekend on Governors Island (Take the free ferry over.) Then, venture down the rabbit hole in an updated version of "Alice in Wonderland," or be "Blown Away by Poetry" at the NY International Fringe Festival, the largest multi-arts fest in the continent! Finally, head to the annual Tomato Sauce Wars at a Peekskill Italian Festival complete with stilt walkers, balloon makers, clowns, and face painters, and celebrate National S'Mores Day by making the sweet treat with the Nature Center.
