Mother, the matriarch of a white upper middle class home in New Rochelle, Tateh, the socialist Jewish immigrant and his young daughter, and the African-American piano player, Coalhouse Walker Jr. All intermingle with the likes of such historical figures as Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, J.P. Morgan and Evelyn Nesbit.
