Description: Carol Armstrong, Yale University, examines the place of portraiture in contemporary photography on a global stage. Looking at changing concepts of personhood against the historical background of portraiture in painting and other traditional mediums, this lecture will track the shift to the photographic portraiture in the 19th century, and the further shift in photography in the 1970s and 1980s toward large-scaled imagery and references to art history. Following the lecture, guests are invited to enjoy a reception and exhibition viewing of Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective.
