Time to Trick or Treat for UNICEF

With Halloween right around the corner, it's a great time to think about how you can help others and still enjoy the frights of the night.   We are so blessed, my son and I. We have never spent a night homeless, nor have we ever gone to bed hungry. But many, many children the world over -  and here in the United States, where no one should want for any basic need - go to bed wherever they can put their heads at night and with empty stomachs.   There is much we can do to help end world poverty. It takes mere pennies to provide water and nutrition for a child - less than most of us spend on our daily Starbucks.

  • Six cents buys water for a thirsty child
  • $2 provides nutrition for a hungry child
  • $44 buys school supplies for 20 children
  • $112 provides emergency blankets to 37 childre
  • $200 immunizes 550 children against measles

It takes so little to DO so much good
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF kicks off at the end of this month. It's a fantastic way to involve your kids in helping others, in building a life-long commitment to doing good. If you'd like to participate, you can go to any Hallmark Gold Crown store now or Pier 1 store (after Oct. 1st) to pick up boxes or you can order a kit from UNICEF or by calling toll-free 1-800-4-UNICEF.   Since giving should be a pleasure rather than a sacrifice, the UNICEF website gives great tips on ways to make the fundraiser fun too.   Happy helping this Halloween!

About the Author: Mary MacRae Warren (aka Mrs. Cleavage) is a single mother who lives with her delightful young boy child in a cluttered apartment in Crown Heights. She is saucy, opinionated, creative, and a smarty-pants - not necessarily in that order. This is her story, live and unedited from Brooklyn. Check out her other thoughts at Eat. Drink. Memory.
