Rockland Country Day School (RCDS) brings forth the best in every student by knowing and educating each of them as an individual. Our culture of inclusion, individuality, and innovation enables students to maximize their strengths and blaze their own paths. Our college preparatory program appreciates students’ diverse interests and needs, and rests on the pillars of critical thinking, creative expression, integrity, community service, and the cherishing of diversity. Our school sits on 20 rolling acres in Rockland County, purchased by Wolcott H. Pitkin. In 1909 Pitkin established residence in Congers, New York, and purchased a fine, working farm. Years later, Dr. E. Winifred Pitkin, the last surviving family member, turned the farm into a clinic, where she, a pioneering female doctor, treated patients in what had been the family residence. Dr. Pitkin, a Wellesley graduate, began her career as an obstetrician and gynecologist and expanded her practice to include pediatrics.
Today, the school’s campus continues to serve children, educating and guiding them from Pre-Kindergarten through high school. Our curriculum has, for more than 50 years, included an emphasis on learning-by-doing. Students are responsible for maintaining the organic garden which offers contributions to the school’s daily menu. In 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama praised the RCDS food program for its success in teaching students about healthy nutrition. Science classes, from botany to chemistry, have frequent opportunities to see nature in action, as students use the campus as a living classroom. Whenever possible, students engage in demonstrating what they have learned in concrete, observable ways, and our Independent Studies Program provides all students, elementary through high school, with a way to demonstrate what they have learned- while creating a new knowledge base. At its core, RCDS is a school where children become rooted in ethical integrity and learn to sustain individual differences. Their regard for multi-cultural needs, humanitarian idealism, and community service raises their awareness of human need in the larger world. Our talented and eclectic faculty not only provides challenging, rigorous instruction, but also shepherds students through the journey of finding their unique voice and strength. At RCDS students are exposed to different ways of thinking and being, and differences are embraced. Our students and alumni are serious about their studies, involvement in the school community, and commitment to leaving the world better than when they found it. Their pursuit of higher education, meaningful work, and engagement in our global society are evidence of the academic foundation RCDS has provided. Click here for RCDS in the News!
