Terri R. Epstein, an occupational therapist with a specialty in sensory integration, will explain sensory processing and the importance of sensory regulation for learning. She will discuss and demonstrate techniques that help regulate a child physically and ways to incorporate the concept of a "sensory diet" throughout the day -- at home and at school -- to allow children to be more present and available for learning. Dr. Douglas DeMassa will discuss how his brain-based martial art, Neuron-Do®, integrates physical movement with learning to help students improve attention, endurance, short-term memory skills, impulse control, time-on-task, visual tracking, balance, coordination, and self-confidence.

Join long-time birder and naturalist Richard Worth who will teach you how to identify Connecticut's birds by sight and sound. Backyard birding begins at the feeder, so you'll also learn who is at the feeder at this time of year, their feeding habits, and their characteristics. Worth will discuss ways to attract birds to your feeder, what birdseed (or nectar) to use, and where to place feeders. Is it possible to write and perform a 60-second version of a great book? Re-tell high-octane versions of the best in children's literature. Participants will pick the most important scenes, characters and lines and then speed-read through the finished product. Once you've learned how to edit, analyze, compromise and communicate, you'll use technology to enhance literary skills by creating an animated mini-movie trailer of one of your 60 second extravaganzas. The book this month is Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Grades 4-6, children under 12 must have a caregiver in the building. No registration.

Inspired by WAC's upcoming exhibition, "William Wegman: The Traveler," WAC seeks toy designs conceived by children ages 5-12 for a juried contest.
