During Lincoln's historic 12-day train journey from his home in Springfield, IL to his Inauguration in Washington, DC in Feb. 1861, Lincoln participated in 100 speaking stops or public events along the way. His only speaking stop in Westchester County was at the Peekskill train depot, because he knew the local Congressman, William Nelson (they both served in the 30th Congress

Lisa Suriano, founder and creator of the Veggiecation Program (veggiecation.com), and Whole Foods Market in Manhattanās Upper West Side will get kids excited to eat their vegetables with kids cooking class on Feb. 21.
Class will teach participants how to prepare a selection of kid-friendly, healthy veggie dishes. As practiced in participating classrooms throughout the country, kids will be invited to help prepare Veggiecation Programās recipes, sample Veggiecation Programās culinary creations, experience vegetables in their raw form and cast a vote on how they liked the recipes in the Veggiecation Ballot Boxes. The Storywalk is based on the book entitled, "Giant Steps to Change the World," written by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, and illustrated by Sean Qualls. Open to families with children in grades 1-6 beginning Sunday, February 19 and continuing through Sunday, March 25, 2012. Storywalk instructions are available at the Children's Information Desk (The Compass) in The Trove. Participants must sign in there before proceeding on the walk. Children in grades 1-3 must be accompanied by an adult on the walk. Children in grades 4-6 may follow the walk without an adult.
Exhibition: Figure It Out - Clay Art Center

A national invitational exhibition featuring functional works inspired by the human form by over 70 clay artists. The works on display will be mostly functionally-based or vessel-oriented, suggestive of or inspired by the human form. The artists were challenged to interpret the theme in a way that best suited their own voice. For instance, the artists could have surface or glaze decoration that incorporates the figure or parts of the body in some way, or they might exaggerate a pot's "human" parts, such as the "foot," "neck," "shoulder," and "body." The gallery will be filled with cups and mugs, plates, platters, bowls, vases, candlesticks, teapots, salt & peppers, vessels, etc. Some will have subtle reference to the human form, others will be more obvious. The exhibit will give viewers the opportunity to view (and take home) works that have the ability to enhance their in-home dining and living experiences. Exhibit runs through March 31.

'Remembering 9/11' Exhibit - New-York Historical Society

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11, the New-York Historical Society presents this special exhibition, which includes a selection of several hundred photographs taken by professional and amateur photographers in the immediate aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center (originally collected in the independent exhibition "here is new york: a democracy of photographs"), as well as letters written to policemen and firemen; objects that were placed in makeshift shrines around New York; images and texts from The New York Times "Portraits of Grief" series; photographs of the Tribute in Light; and drawings of the National September 11 Memorial. When the renovated and transformed New-York Historical Society opens fully to the public on November 11, 2011, "Remembering 9/11" will be joined by a permanent installation of photographs from "here is new york" in the Robert H. and Clarice Smith New York Gallery of American History. Approximately 1,500 photographs by 790 contributors will be on display, along with a large fragment of a fire truck destroyed during the 9/11 attack.
