The Fray - Radio City Music Hall
April 12, 2012 -
By pitching their music somewhere between the arena-friendly style of U2 and the mature pop/rock of bands like Maroon 5 and Counting Crows, the Fray rose to commercial prominence with their 2005 debut, How to Save a Life. The Denver-based band had formed three years prior, when former schoolmates Isaac Slade (vocals, piano) and Joe King (guitar, vocals) unexpectedly bumped into each other at a local music store. The pair began a series of two-man jam sessions and soon expanded their lineup with two of Slade 's former bandmates, drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist David Welsh . Slade's younger brother, Caleb, also joined the band for a stint but was ultimately asked to leave; the resulting rift between the two siblings would later inspire the band's first hit single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)." After issuing the Movement EP in 2002, the quartet gained the support of Denver's KTCL radio station with a follow-up release, 2003's Reason EP. As the Fray's airplay increased alongside their local profile (Westword, a Denver alternative weekly publication, deemed them "Best New Band" in 2004), they began attracting attention from Epic Records. The label ultimately signed the band in December 2004, and the Fray toured alongside Weezer and Ben Folds the following summer.
How to Save a Life was released in September 2005, and "Over My Head (Cable Car)" found a quick home on modern rock radio. By early 2006, it had crossed over to Top 40 chart status, peaking at number eight and whetting the public's appetite for another hit. The Fray responded by releasing the album's title track, which was heavily used in a promotional campaign for the TV series Grey's Anatomy and quickly became one of 2006's biggest singles. "How to Save a Life" was a worldwide smash, reaching the Top Ten in the U.S. (where it continued to chart for 58 consecutive weeks) and peaking at number one in Bulgaria, Ireland, Canada, and Spain. By the time the smoke had cleared, the Fray's debut had been certified double-platinum in the U.S. and was declared the best-selling digital album of all time.
As How to Save a Life continued to enjoy worldwide chart success, the live album Live at the Electric Factory was released in selected independent stores in July 2006. The Fray re-released their Reason EP the following year while continuing to tour, occasionally playing new material at their high-profile shows. The band also found time to return to the recording studio, and 2009 saw the release of their self-titled sophomore effort, The Fray. The Fray's third studio outing was produced by Brendan O'Brien and was inspired by the group's trips to Rwanda and Germany. The resulting Scars and Stories, which was named after an unused B-side, was preceded by the single 'Heartbeat' and released on February 7, 2012.

NatureMania - Swindler Cove Park
April 12, 2012 - Inwood
NatureMania was established in the spring of 2008, as a youth-oriented celebration of urban nature. This year's NatureMania theme is "Engage Your Senses." Kids will use their five senses (sight, taste, touch, hearing, and smell) to observe, interpret, and engage the world around them. At NatureMania, kids will become especially aware of how important the five senses can be.
While most students view spring break as a time of escape from routine, NatureMania provides a mixture of fun and learning that kick starts the growing season: an escape into a world of wild animals, aquatic nurseries and forests thick with possibility. By the end of the week, participants should find a piece of nature that they didn't know existed in their neighborhood.
As the emergence of spring reenergizes Swindler Cove Park, NatureMania helps welcome the Inwood/Washington Heights community back to their urban landscape. The event's festival format engages participants in various scientific, artistic and cultural activities led by NYRP staff, educators from partner organizations within the NYC Environmental Education (EE) community, community leaders, parents and individuals with talents to share.
Daily schedule and other event details will be provided a few weeks prior to the event. NatureMania is a week-long event, but kids are encouraged to come for however many days they want; you can attend all five days, or choose only one.
Sponsored by the Council of the City of New York and the Office of the Manhattan Borough President.
Please note that no child may be left unattended; a parent or a guardian must remain with their child all day. Also note that you must bring lunch for your child. Light breakfast and snacks will be served.

Who Loves You, Baby? - SoHo Playhouse
Through April 15, 2012 - New York
Who Loves You, Baby?, written by New York’s own Hunter Nelson, has had everyone from hipsters to hip-replacements rolling in the aisles. Under the direction of Taylor Negron, Tom DiMenna expertly channels the unmistakable chutzpah of long-dead 70’s Hollywood tough guy Telly Savalas. That’s right: The no-nonsense Greek-American actor best known as TV’s Lt. Theo Kojak has taken flesh once again -- and he sings, too! Accompanied by virtuosic pianist Alex Leonard, and joined by Henry Kaiser as Telly’s second-banana brother George (part of a “package deal” resurrection), DiMenna creates a unique and surreal atmosphere of nightclub comedy and supernatural stagecraft, all couched in the uncontestable class and cool of a sexier (and somewhat sweatier) time gone by.
Featured in the Wall Street Journal, Who Loves You, Baby? has received cheers from all over: “You will not see a funnier play than Who Loves You, Baby?! As Savalas, Tom DiMenna is hilarious and cool like Telly.” -- Nytheater.com; “Who Loves You, Baby? is hilarious. Tom DiMenna is front and center as a dead ringer for the now-dead Savalas. It’s a brilliantly breezily bombastic performance that induces giggles galore for its gumption and straight-faced pontification.” -- Nitelife Exchange; “I laughed my way from the beginning right through the end.” -- LA Fringe Review; “Tom DiMenna plays the hairless icon with comedic grace… [the show is] simultaneously ridiculous and refreshing.” -- LA Theatre Review
Come witness this uproarious and fundamentally indescribable lounge act from the world beyond, and see for yourself why the world needs Telly now more than ever!
Who Loves You, Baby? will run from January 18 to April 15, 2012 at The Huron Club at The SoHo Playhouse (15 Vandam Street). New Performance Schedule: Wednesday – Friday at 7:30PM. Tickets are $25. RAY JOHNSON: THE DOVER STREET YEARS, 1953 - 1960 - The Center for Curatorial Studies, Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College
Through April 15, 2012 - Annandale-on-Hudson
It isn’t really necessary to see the moticos or know where it is because i have seen them. Perhaps i might point them out to you. The best way is to go about your business not thinking about silly moticos because when you begin seeing them describing what they are or where they are going is so just make sure you wake up from sleeping and go your way and go to sleep when you will. The moticos does that too and does not worry about you perhaps you are the moticos. – Ray Johnson, “What is a Moticos”
Painter, collagist, graphic designer, correspondent, performer, collaborator, mail-art enthusiast – despite his multifaceted artistic endeavors and cult-status as the founder of the New York Correspondance School, in the seventeen years since his suicide in January 1995, Ray Johnson (American, 1927-1995) has become a name rather than a recognized influence. In comparison to his American contemporaries of comparable achievement, Johnson is still relatively unfamiliar to the American public, and more importantly insufficiently understood by those interested in modern art. RAY JOHNSON: THE DOVER STREET YEARS, 1953 – 1960 brings together nearly forty works created during the period he lived and worked at 2 Dover Street in Lower Manhattan. It is the first exhibition to focus exclusively on this period of his work.
Moving to New York City in 1948 after attending Black Mountain College in North Carolina where he studied closely with Josef Albers, Johnson found himself at the epicenter of Abstract Expressionism’s core decade (1945-1955). Living and working in a neighborhood known as Coenties Slip, he found community among like-minded individuals such as John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Morton Feldman, Richard Lippold, Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly, Ad Reinhardt, and many others. In conversation with these individuals, he began to turn away from traditional modernist models and explore alternatives through the physical manipulation of materials. Johnson’s work from this period offers profound and poignant insight contained on an intimate scale into avant-garde artistic production and aesthetic thought in the 1950s.
Bringing together nearly 40 works, this exhibition traces Johnson’s career during the time he lived and worked at 2 Dover Street in Lower Manhattan, 1953-1960. Highlighted in the exhibition are examples of his graphic design work including dust jackets for New Directions, LP cover art, and window displays, and photographs by Ad Reinhardt and Elizabeth Novick of early moticos displayed outdoors. No exhibition to date has focused exclusively on this period of Ray Johnson’s work, many works in the exhibition have never been seen before.
The exhibition is organized by Anastasia Rygle, Curator.

Tibetan Tapestries – Dream Weaves from the Himalayas Designs by José Sanint - Tibet House US Gallery
Through April 18, 2012 - New York
Tibet House US is delighted to present its next magnificent art exhibition entitled Tibetan Tapestries – Dream Weaves from the Himalayas. Featuring contemporary designs by Colombian architect José Sanint, beautiful textiles have been hand-woven by Tibetan artisans using carefully restored antique ceremonial garbs and an ancient Tibetan-Himalayan-Buddhist weaving tradition. Tibetan Tapestries – Dream Weaves from the Himalayas will be on display from February 28, 2011 through April 18, 2012 at the Tibet House US Gallery with a special opening reception on March 2, 2012 from 6-8pm at the gallery. These great works of artisanship will be made available for sale, supporting the work of the Tibet House US and that of the Akrabhala Foundation, which was founded by José Sanint to protect and preserve the endangered art and culture of Tibet.
The restored antique Buddhist ceremonial fabrics, between 150-200 years old, have been woven together with Sanint’s modern tapestries using the same traditional methods used to create the original textiles, essentially crafting a contemporary piece of art with equal parts history and hope for the future. Tibetan craftswomen dye the fabric with natural pigments made from a variety of regional flora and then hand-weave the textiles on a vertical loom. Traditionally, a woman will craft one for her mother and each of her male family members, excluding herself. When her grandmother passes away, she inherits the matriarch’s coveted clothing, bringing the process full-circle.
ABOUT JOSE SANINT & THE AKRABHALA FOUNDATION:
In 2010, architect Jose Sanint closed his architecture and interior design office in Colombia and traveled abroad to the Himalayas. Sanint journeyed through the mountains of Nepal and befriended Pasang Tsering, a 50 year old Tibetan, who introduced Sanint to the culture of his remote village. Together the two men began a project: gathering and restoring ancient Himalayan fabrics to their original glory. After many months of exploration and creation with these fabrics, the two men had created a collection of tapestries that became the catalyst for creating The Akrabahla Foundation.
The Akrabhala Foundation will establish a workshop that will keep these traditional Tibetan-Himalayan weaving customs alive while also creating a space in the global market for contemporary works of this ancient art form. Through these endeavors, Akrabhala will assist the artisans in sharing their art with the world, creating a way for these craftswomen to promote their heritage and support their families.

Two excellent collective exhibitions will be gracing the walls of Agora Gallery this spring, in addition to a remarkable solo exhibition featuring the works of Austrian artist Fred Friedrich. Portals of Perception displays works which seem to breathe with creative energy and inspiration, and a passionate joy in the world and its complexities which they pass, in turn, to those who see them.
