Introducing... Alison Reiser, the Rockland Calendar Editor

For years, I planned to grow up, work in the city, get married around age 30, and have kids around age 35. Unfortunately, 35 came and went and I was still single in the city. Six months later, I had a date with a colleague at the Bronx Zoo, where we were both working. On the first anniversary of our first date, we were married. Three years later we had our first daughter and two years after that, our second daughter. We love being older parents. I especially enjoy meeting other older moms. There are a lot of us out there! Past lives found me working as a newspaper reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer and doing public relations for the Bronx Zoo. Now, besides seeing me each month in Rockland Parent, readers can find me working nights behind the front desk of the Valley Cottage Animal Hospital. The crazy hours allow me to spend days at home with my two daughters, ages 1 and 4. Our family can often be found enjoying programs at the Haverstraw Library, attending shows by the Bossy Frog, visiting zoos, and appreciating local parks and playgrounds—especially the Haverstraw Bay County Playground and Bear Mountain State Park. We also enjoy fairs and festivals. Our annual favorites are the Renaissance Faire in Sterling Forest and the Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck. Although neither of us are native to the area, my husband and I enjoy Rockland County's location along the Hudson River and proximity to the city as well as rural Orange County. Our annual vacation takes us to Las Vegas, where several members of his family settled after leaving Long Island. The city of glitz is actually pretty family-friendly and we all look forward to these trips.
