Officially Summer: Mermaid Parade,
Le Carrousel Magique, Princess Katie & Racer Steve, and Outdoor Concerts

    T

It's officially summer! Spend the season's first weekend celebrating at family concerts, various parks in the NYC area, fishing at the pier, or learning about creepy crawly creatures.

Carousel RidesBecome spellbound with an enchanting magic show, or have "unfroggetable" fun with Flaubert Frog and his friends all at Bryant Park
—and while you're there, hop on the park's Le Carrousel for a spin. Nearby, try your hand at kayaking or rowing, or catch-and-release fishing for kids 8 and older. Then, build a ship that really floats at the Hudson River Museum's family weekend workshop. Elsewhere, stroll the boardwalk at the Mermaid Parade and take a spin on Coney Island's roller-coasters.

TarantulasAnimal & Plant Kingdom:
See fuzzy tarantulas live and up close, and discover why ladybugs are a gardener's best friend. Elsewhere, learn about what's sweet and stinky in the garden. The Long Island Children's Museum teaches kids about nutrition by considering wild animals that are rarely overweight or unhealthy—kids then act out natural movements of animals and create a nutritious snack. Next, head to the zoo for interactive activities for kids and also catch family favorite Chris Rowlands perform songs about animals.

Summer Shows: Popular kiddie rock band Princess Katie & Kiddie Rock BandRacecar Steve hosts a concert in the park where kids are encouraged to get up and dance. Another kids' musician, Moey's Music Party (also an NYC mom of one) celebrates the launch of her latest CD. Enjoy more music, games, and food at the Mamaroneck Block Party in support of four local charities. Plus, uncover Shakespeare with your kids at the free outdoor production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, or head to something you already know they like: Disney's High School Musical Jr.

Fun Indoors: Take a break from the heat and get ready for a slumber party at the library, make a free craft at the bakery, and bowl for free!
