Co-Op Theatre East (COTE) and Mixed Phoenix Theatre Group (MPTG) are embarking on their most ambitious project to date, the debut of Muzungu, a new full-length work from emerging playwright David Myers, directed by COTE Co-Artistic Director Robert A. K. Gonyo and featuring MPTG Co-Artistic Director Ryan Victor Pierce alongside Nneoma Nkuku (Law and Order: SVU, Boardwalk Empire). In celebration of this collaboration, both groups are hosting a wine tasting benefit on Thursday, August 11th at Space On White.

Muzungu follows the journey of Mathew, an American aid worker, as he travels to present-day Rwanda. The play explores the unseen motives in doing good and the unexpected consequences in lending a helping hand. Muzungu will be produced at the 4th Street Theatre from October 14th through October 30th, 2011.

The Muzungu Wine Benefit will feature a sneak preview of original production designs, clips from the play, and a chance to mingle with the actors and artistic team. Wine will be provided by Hampton's Wine and Liquors, along with live jazz music from Jim Whitney on bass and Pete Smith on guitar. Artwork from local artist, Mark Perry, will also be on display. Tax-deductible tickets are $100 and proceeds go to support the production. The benefit will take place at Space On White, 81 White Street in Tribeca, on August 11th from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. For reservations please email cooptheatreeast@gmail.com.
