Halloween may take place on October 31, but it's a holiday with legs. The candy sticks around for months afterward, and many events occur prior to the actual day. Below, some fun local events:

Teenagers may not wish to trick or treat anymore, but they may want to role-play as a monster in Teen Zombie Night. October 13, 7pm. FREE.

Westport Public Library, 20 Jesup Road, Westport, CT

Ridgefield Weekend is a town-wide celebration offering a Halloween parade, pumpkin run, lantern tour, and pie-eating contest -- pumpkin, we presume. October 14-16, 9am-9pm.

Downtown Ridgefield, CT

Take a lantern-light tour through a historic graveyard while listening to tales from the spirits of Norwalk's past, in A Haunting at Mill Hill. October 15 and 22; 5:30pm, 7pm, and 8:30pm.

Mill Hill Historic Park, 2 East Wall Street, Norwalk, CT; www.norwalkhistoricalsociety.org

Vote for your favorite scarecrow in Scarecrows on Parade at the Beardsley Zoo. October 19-30, 9am-4pm. $12; $10 children ages 3-11; free children ages 2 and younger.

Stick around as darkness falls at the zoo for Howl-O-Ween, which includes haunted hayrides, a frightening farmyard, and a gruesome greenhouse. October 21-22, 28-29; 6-9pm. $8.

Finally, find out who won the scarecrow competition and enjoy music and harvest hayrides at Boo at the Zoo. October 30, 12-3pm. Children 12 and younger wearing a costume get into the zoo free.

Beardsley Zoo, 1875 Noble Avenue, Bridgeport, CT

Wear a costume and grab a map to find strategically placed treats all around the farm in Trick or Treat on the Heckscher Farm. October 30, 1-3pm. $10; $5 ages 4-17; free ages 3 and younger.
