Venue Description: Originally founded in 1946 as the New York State Institute for the Applied Arts and Sciences, Westchester Community College (WCC) expanded to a 218-acre campus in 1957. The main campus is now located in Valhalla, with nine extension sites in Mahopac, Mt. Vernon, Ossining, Peekskill, Port Chester, and Yonkers. As a community college, WCC offers college credits that transfer to four-year schools. Currently there are approximately 12,000 part- and full-time undergraduate students; add to that the continuing education program and the total rises to about 20,000. The student/faculty ratio is 16.1:1 and 98 percent of the faculty has obtained Master?s degrees. The college takes pride in its cultural diversity; African American and Hispanic students make up 18 percent and 16 percent of population respectively. Westchester Community College has been recognized for more SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence than any other community college in the system. This is in part due to WCC's 50 associate and certificate programs. There are three types of associate degrees in 36 disciplines and certificate degrees can be obtained for 15-30 credits in 20 career fields. The academic year at Westchester Community College consists of a spring and fall semester as well as two summer sessions. Financial aid is available; almost one-third of the enrolled students receive some form of aid. In addition, there are several men and women's intercollegiate sports teams, over 70 student clubs, 25 acres of parking, as well as a childcare center. Prospective students are welcome to visit the college while it is in session; tours can be arranged by calling the Office of Admissions at 914-606-6735. Open houses at the extension centers and lots more information can be found at www.sunywcc.edu.
