Venue Description: This 1,255-acre park has historical, recreational, and environmental significance. The former dumping ground has become one of New York City's flagship parks and Queens' largest. Known for its annual ethnic events, Flushing Meadows Corona Park invites families and visitors for food, dance, and music during the summer months. Planning a family reunion or birthday party? The Corona Park can be your host. It is as simple as applying for a special events permit (required for gatherings of more than 20 people) by calling 718-760-6560. Families can enjoy six playgrounds, three of which are dinosaur-themed, as well as one that serves young children with and without disabilities. There are also fields for soccer, baseball, and croquet, and tennis courts available by permit. Enjoy miniature golf at Pitch & Putt Golf, take a ride on the carousel, go for a stroll on the Flushing Bay Promenade, or view animals at the Queens Wildlife Center and children?s farm. In addition, rowboats and paddleboats are available for rental at the boathouse at the fresh water Meadow Lake. This serves as a popular fishing, picnic, and barbequing spot. On the historical side, located throughout the park are numerous monuments and sculptures including ?The Rocket Thrower,? created for the 1964 World?s Fair, and ?Time Capsules,? a granite monument where two time capsules are buried underground. Possibly the most renowned piece of artwork, popularized by its appearance in several Hollywood pictures, is the 140-foot high steel Unisphere. Corona Park is also home to the New York Hall of Science, Queens Wildlife Conservation Center, and Queens Theatre in the Park. For the avid sports fan, Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center offer great sporting events for all ages. The Tennis Center, which hosts the U.S. Open, is open to the public year-round. Corona Park?s newest addition is the 110,000-square foot indoor Aquatic Center, which features an Olympic-size swimming pool and skating rink fit for any season of the year.Parking can usually be found at Citi Field for $10.
