Description: Queens Botanical Garden is home to birds rarely seen in urban communities: red-tailed hawks, robins, and even pheasants! Join QBG staffer Shari Romar for this free annual bird counting event. Half nature walk, half scavenger hunt! Perfect for children and beginners. Restroom facilities easily accessible. Our results will be added to those submitted from across the continent. Meet at the Visitor & Administration Building lobby. For more information or to register email sromar@queensbotanical.org.
Venue Description: Calling all young gardeners, ages 5 to 12! The HSBC Children?s Garden is a hands-on discovery program that lets children?s imaginations and knowledge blossom as they plant and harvest vegetables and flowers, visit QBG?s engaging 39 acres that include an Herb Garden and a Bee Garden, cook with the food they?ve grown and even make seasonally-themed crafts like Mother?s Day cards with seeded paper.
Popular collections are the bee and herb gardens and the Children's Garden, which offers its hands-on educational program for ages 5-12. The Senior Garden is a four-decade-old quarter-acre garden that provides members with individual areas to grow their own vegetables and flowers. Radishes, zucchini, and even pear trees are common throughout this space and members are free to take home whatever they harvest.
The Wedding Garden, available by appointment only, is a Victorian-style garden with a gazebo, footbridge, and stream--the perfect niche for a romantic wedding. QBG offers guided tours for all ages, environmental citizenship workshops for youth groups, summer internships for teens and compost workshops for local communities.
The Queens Botanical Garden is located 43-50 Main Street in Flushing, and is easily accessibly by bus, train, or car from all parts of the tri-state area. Admission is always free but donations are welcome. Hours are 8am-6pm, but the Gardens are closed Mondays. For more information, call 718-886-3800 or visit queensbotanical.org.
