Venue Description: The Beardsley Zoo, Connecticut's only zoo, just celebrated its 90th birthday. The zoo is home to more than 300 animals, primarily from North and South America. They also house many endangered and threatened species, such as an Amur (Siberian) tiger, Andean condor, Ocelot, Red wolf, Andean (spectacled) bear, Maned wolf, and Golden lion tamarin. The Zoo welcomed new animals in honor of its birthday, including an Andean condor, Canada lynx and nine vampire bats. There is a South American rainforest exhibit, complete with a free flight aviary, a prairie dog exhibit where you can view the animals "popping" up and the New England Farmyard with goats, cows, pigs and sheep among other barnyard animals. Bring your classroom to the zoo with the Animal Encounter program. Animal Encounters are short presentations where students meet one or two live animals, see bio facts and learn insider tips. Zoomobiles bring the zoo to you, with indoor educational presentations from live animal ambassadors. The zoo offers year round programs for families, including a summer program for children 6-14 years old. Families can also find refreshments at the Peacock Café, relax at the Picnic Grove, and enjoy a carousel ride.
The Beardsley Zoo is at 1875 Noble Ave. in Bridgeport, CT. Hours are 9am-4pm daily; closed major holidays. Admission is $12; $10 children ages 3-11 and seniors; free for children younger than 3. For more info: 203-394-6565 or beardsleyzoo.org.
